There is a book at the Lewiston Public Library called Mothers of Maine, written by the late Mrs. Helen Coffin Beedy of Farmington. Doubtless a large number of Lewiston people have read it, and others would like to if it were brought to their notice. A few days ago the writer, “nosing around” in the stack room at the Library, found it on the shelves with the Maine books. The title first attracted attention, then the name of the author stimulated the desire to know more of the contents of the book. It is an interesting tale, this story of the pioneer women of Maine.
50 Years Ago, 1956
With the possibility that a sizable amount of counterfeit half dollars have been “unloaded” in the Twin City area, possibly in Lewiston, Lewiston police yesterday urged citizens to be on the lookout for them.
The Maine Petroleum Industries Committee plans to remind every Maine motorist he is paying 10 cents in taxes – seven cents state and three cents federal – on each gallon of gasoline he buys.
A pencil must have been missing in one voting booth in Ward Three, Auburn, because one voter tried to make her check marks with magenta lipstick and only succeeded in smearing it all over one side of the ballot.
25 Years Ago, 1981
A police dispatcher narrowly escaped possible serious injury in a blast at the entrance of Lisbon police headquarters early, a blast that could be heard as far away as Durham and Topsham. The force of the blast broke three panes of glass in a window in the lobby just to the left of the door and a pane of glass in the town manager’s office on the ground floor of the building, directly above police headquarters. The police department is located in the basement portion of the town office building.
Lewiston Raceways will have its own special Veteran’s Day observance next Wednesday when it stages “Veteran’s Night” at the track, bringing in guests from local area service organizations and a group of disabled veterans from Togus.
