LEWISTON – The police department is asking motorists to observe no parking signs downtown and to expect traffic to be disrupted before and after the 11 a.m. funeral today for Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Deputy David Rancourt.
Rancourt died last weekend while heading up a dive team searching for evidence in the Androscoggin River.
Police officers and military personnel will meet at 9 a.m. at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Birch Street, and then march as a group along Jefferson Street to Ash Street and on to the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. These streets will be closed to traffic and there will be no parking allowed between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. along this route. The restricted area will be clearly marked with no parking signs.
Bartlett Street between College and Ash streets will also be closed to traffic.
Following the Mass, a procession of police vehicles will travel from Bartlett Street to Ash Street, right onto Bates Street and on to Main Street, motoring to St. Peter’s Cemetery on Switzerland Road. Traffic along this route will be briefly interrupted.
Public parking near the Basilica will be difficult, so the police department recommends using nearby municipal parking lots and garages.
