MEXICO – A Sabattus man accused of committing two sex crimes last month against two young Mexico children remained behind bars Wednesday night in Oxford County Jail in Paris.
Robert Raftice, 20, of 10 Terry Circle, was arrested at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday by Patrolman Dean Benson and charged with gross sexual assault, a Class A felony, and unlawful sexual contact, a Class B felony.
Raftice, who was free on bail after being arrested in late August in Saco on a charge of operating after suspension, was also charged with violating those bail conditions, Benson said early Wednesday evening.
An arraignment date has yet to be set for Oxford County Superior Court in Paris, but Benson said he expects Raftice to be indicted by the next Oxford County grand jury.
Benson said he began investigating the sex crimes on Sept. 5 after a complainant met with him and Dixfield police Sgt. Mark Dow.
“The complainant said Raftice had sexually assaulted the person’s son and daughter – both of whom are under the age of 7 – while babysitting them. The family knew him,” Benson said.
At that time, police removed Raftice from the residence.
Following investigation and with assistance from Rumford Detective Lt. Mark Cayer and Maine State Police Detective Terry James, Benson said Raftice confessed to the crimes on Tuesday.
