Big trees wanted

DIXFIELD – The Maine Forest Service is looking for big trees to nominate for the 2007 Maine Register of Big Trees, and the town of Dixfield is hoping to help. Maine has 148 state champions and two national champions, a tamarack and an eastern white pine.

Residents are asked to look at trees and measure the trunk circumference, vertical height and average crown spread and contact the Dixfield Town Office at 562-8151 for additional information or help in measurements. Champions are chosen on a point system by the measurements. Nominations will be accepted by the Maine Forest Service until Dec. 31.
