The results are especially interesting for Maine, since this state and Michigan were two which had raised their drinking ages and experienced a big drop in highway accidents. Maine raised its drinking age from 18 to 20 in 1979. It resulted in a 17 percent drop in non-injury, alcohol-related crashes.
