“Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility” is the theme of American Education Week, November 13-17. Educators are committed to providing challenging curriculums in an environment that fosters respect for everyone. Americans recognize the value of an education in order for our youth to attain their dreams and to compete in our technological world.

Every day an educator steps into the classroom, they assume many roles that extend beyond the original expectations of a public school teacher of the 1700 and 1800s. Society has changed, and educators are faced with many issues unrelated to their subject matter, yet vital to the well-being of each student. School employees strive to ensure each student receives a quality education and feels secure in their environment.

Education communities cannot do it alone. It is everyone’s responsibility to make sure each child comes to school ready to learn. Parents, guardians and community members need to emphasize the importance of school and encourage each child to reach their potential.

Consider writing a note, sending an e-mail, or phoning an educator this week to express your appreciation for their dedication to our future: our youth.
