As a daily commuter on Court Street in Auburn, I have witnessed school bus drivers using municipal property – schoolbuses – as roadblocks to impede the flow of traffic in front of Auburn Middle School. Not only do they endanger the buses, but also the students on those buses.
Recently, I was in a line of traffic and as I approached the school, the first in a line of four buses driving bumper-to-bumper pulled out across the opposite lane of traffic directly in front of the car ahead of me. Thankfully, both of us stopped in time. Those buses were loaded with students.
If a commuter ran the stop sign at the school, they would risk being ticketed for driving to endanger or some other violation.
Auburn has really dropped the ball regarding the students’ safety by allowing this practice to continue. School officials should consider placing a crossing guard or other traffic control official back in front of the school before a preventable tragedy occurs.
