MILWAUKEE – Brandon Cotton scored 24 points and Ryvon Covile added 12 points and 13 rebounds to lead Detroit to a come-from-behind 57-50 win over Maine Monday in the first round of the CBE Classic.

Detroit (1-0) advanced to play Tuesday against the winner of the Idaho State-Marquette game Monday evening.

Phillipe Tchekane Bofia scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Jon Sheets added 12 points for Maine (0-2), which led for most of the game.

Detroit took a 46-45 lead with 4:20 remaining when Cotton’s 3-pointer capped a 12-4 run. Cotton got eight points during the run. It was the Titans’ first lead since midway through the first half.

Brandon Bell’s 3-pointer with 1:26 remaining gave Detroit a 51-45 lead.

Kevin Reed hit two free throws for Maine to trim the lead to 51-47 with 47.4 seconds remaining, but Detroit hit four of six free throws to pull away.

Cotton sealed the win with a steal and a dunk with five seconds left. Sheets got a 3-pointer as time expired.

Maine shot just 32 percent from the field for the game. Reed, who is Maine’s all-time leader in 3-point field goals, hit just 2 of 14 shots and missed all eight of his 3-point tries. He sat out last season as a medical red shirt.

Bofia got all 13 points as Maine went on a 13-4 run in the first half to take a 24-16 lead. Maine led 27-23 at halftime.

Detroit, meanwhile, improved to 55 percent shooting in the second half after shooting 33 percent in the first half.
