PARIS -A 19-year-old man in the Oxford County Jail Tuesday has confessed to burglarizing a store, police say.

Jesse Arsenault of 180 Packard Road, Peru, was booked at the jail Monday afternoon after admitting to Oxford County Sheriff’s Deputy Justin Brown that he burglarized a Sumner convenience store.

Brown said the burglary happened late Sunday night or early Monday morning. He added that Arsenault confessed to stealing about $500 in food, alcohol and tobacco, and caused about $200 in damage to the property.

Police are continuing their investigation of several other burglaries in the area, according to Maine State Police Trooper Tyler Stevenson.

In those burglaries, Stevenson said that about $1,000 in stolen tools were later returned to their owners. The camps also suffered damage to doors and windows as a result of the break-ins.

These incidents happened around Nov. 7, Stevenson said.

State police believe people are involved in the camp burglaries. Stevenson said he did have suspects but could not release names.

Arsenault is facing the felony charge of burglary and misdemeanor charges of theft and criminal mischief from the sheriff’s office. If state police find sufficient evidence that Arsenault committed the Byron and Andover burglaries, he could be charged with five additional counts of burglary, theft and criminal mischief, Stevenson said.

Initially Arsenault was held at a bail of $100,000 real estate or $25,000 cash, and when he appeared at South Paris District Court Tuesday his bail was reduced to $500 cash with conditions, court records show.

According to jail officials, he was still incarcerated Tuesday evening.

Stevenson said Arsenault has recently been charged with two gas drive-offs, and does have a criminal history.
