The governor and Legislature listened as Maine voters spoke again. Here are a few things the voters said:

• Hike taxes. We don’t pay enough, especially on property. We know state government will squeeze only the “rich” and leave everyone else alone.

• Spend more. Elected officials know what we want and need, far better than the we do, so we voted once again to limber up the state’s checkbook and credit cards. We were disappointed there were no bonds on the ballot this year to bump Maine’s long-term debt.

• Buy up more of the state. We authorized government to take more land off the tax rolls and preserve it for the future.

• Make health insurance more expensive. We decided to pile on the rules and regulations and drive out what little free-market competition remains. Even better, we want government to take over the whole thing. We know that Department of Health and Human Services can handle the increased load.

• Raise the average age. We voted to keep pushing their kids to other states for jobs, to raise higher education costs in-state and drive them out even earlier. There are outbound U-Haul statistics, not just inbound.

The voters said a lot more, but nothing they haven’t said before.

I wonder how they’ll feel if they finally get what they voted for.
