PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A self-styled natural healer who offered bogus diagnoses to patients and passed himself off as a medical doctor was ordered Thursday to pay about $1.4 million in restitution for worthless treatments.

John Curran was convicted in May of wire fraud and money laundering. U.S. District Judge Mary Lisi sentenced Curran in August to 150 months in prison and ordered him Thursday to pay restitution to more than 300 patients.

Prosecutors said Curran, 41, of Exeter, told patients that they had ruined immune systems, severely reduced blood cell counts or live parasites in their blood. They said he also sold a liquid called “E-water,” which he claimed had healing powers, as well as a special green drink that was actually a commercial diet supplement. Curran also misled patients about his background and displayed mail-order degrees in his office.
