LEWISTON – Republican Gary Knight was confirmed the winner in House District 81 by a recount conducted Thursday.
Democrat Clark Souther requested the recount after unofficial results showed him trailing Knight by just 10 votes.
After the recount, Knight gained six votes while Souther lost eight. The final vote tally was 1,877 for Knight and 1,853 for Souther.
District 81 includes Leeds, Livermore, Livermore Falls and Wayne. Both men are from Livermore Falls.
The secretary of state has already conducted five recounts. While vote tallies have changed, no results have been reversed. Ten other recounts have been scheduled.
A recount for District 94, which includes Buckfield, Hartford, Paris and Sumner, is scheduled for today. Unofficially, Republican Bruce Hanley leads Democrat Teresea Hayes, 1,882-1,873.
A recount in District 91, which includes Eustis, Kingfield, Rangeley, Dallas Plantation, Bethel, Gilead, Hanover, Newry, Upton, Woodstock and several other areas, is scheduled for Monday. Democrat Tim Carter leads Republican Nancy Bessey, 2,115-2,104.
As of Thursday afternoon, Democrats maintained an 89-60 advantage over Republicans in the Maine House of Representatives. The 151-member body also has two unenrolled representatives.
