It amuses me to see the low esteem recent letter writers have for Maine citizens (Nov. 12). I traveled the world for more than 35 years before retiring to my native Maine. Two things I found true: Most people loved employees from Maine, as they are seen as intelligent and having a great work ethic. And many people would love to live here.
After retiring and returning, I find that, while the level of education isn’t always the highest among the general population, the inherent wisdom and knowledge of worldly matters is much higher here than most places I’ve lived.
Perhaps people who believe their fellow Maine citizens are of lesser intelligence would find things in another state, say Texas, more to their liking. And for those who would visit their will and ‘intelligence’ on the rest of us, perhaps a few years of driving on substandard roads, sending their children to substandard schools, and paying more for insurance due to crime and traffic woes would satisfy their need for a more ‘elite’ citizenry among which to live.
My advice to those so unhappy with Maine taxes is to go to New Jersey or California and pay much more for everything. At any rate, do me a favor and don’t slam the door when leaving. And, please, talk badly about life here.
We who stay wouldn’t appreciate a rush of new folks. Better to have the select few smart enough to know a good thing when they find it.
