OLD ORCHARD BEACH – Alice M. Gilbert, 87, widow of Conrad H. Gilbert of Verrier Drive, formerly of Portland Avenue, died unexpectedly at her home, Sunday, Nov. 19.
She was born on Sept. 1, 1919, in Gorham, N.H., a daughter of Henry and Roseanne Gilbert Provencher. She was one of 17 children. She was educated in Gorham schools. Her husband died in 1997.
For many years they resided in Connecticut prior to returning to the state of Maine and settling in Old Orchard Beach several years ago.
She was employed by the Old Orchard Beach Police Department as a French language interpreter and a clerk for several years, until a few years ago when illness forced her to retire. For many years she was associated with Brookside Cabins on Portland Avenue.
She was an avid knitter. She donated all of her knitting projects to the needy.
She was a communicant of St. Margaret’s parish and was very active in the parish’s annual Christmas fair and other parish activities. She knitted several hundred pairs of mittens and hats each year which she donated. She enjoyed the state of Maine lottery.
Survivors include a sister, Theresa Delafontaine of Sanford; two sisters-in-law, Anita Knox of Old Orchard Beach and Dora Provencher of Berlin, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.
