“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much” This is a quote by Helen Keller and is the theme of the Lewiston Middle School civil rights team. The team promotes the Maine Civil Rights Law which states that people cannot discriminate others based on their race, color, sexual orientation, mental or physical disabilities, national origin, gender, or religion. Lewiston Middle school has the biggest population of students out of all middle schools in Maine. We are also one of the most diverse. Last Saturday, on October 14, the Civil Rights Team had a car wash to raise money for t-shirts and upcoming events. Mrs. Shana Malyata, the team leader, is also a language arts teacher at LMS, had a money goal in mind. The team achieved an even greater amount. About 15 people showed up to help clean the cars at Langlois auto body and auto sales. When they weren’t suddsing up the cars, a few danced and had the occasional mini water fight. Overall the day was productive, filled with fun and laughter.
