Here we go again. “No” on the Palesky tax cap initiative two years ago. Does anyone else remember what the politicians said then? “The people of Maine have spoken. We have to do something about taxes!” Has anyone seen anything different? Nope. Nada. Zip. Just the same old status quo.
Now we have “no” on the Taxpayer Bill of Rights. The governor, and I’m sure many other elected officials, will jump up and say, “The people of Maine have spoken. We have to do something about taxes!” Does anyone honestly think anything will?
I doubt it.
FUD -“Fear, Uncertainty, Deception” -was a catchword for those opposing TABOR. I know in my heart that voters have been deceived. I was not uncertain, but many were. Nor was I fearful. I would rather try something new than stay with something that’s obviously not working. At least TABOR was something.
I had a relative who recently went to Colorado for training, and he had the opportunity to ask many citizens how they felt about TABOR. They all loved it. Amazing. No dissenters. They said they finally have a voice in how their money is spent. Imagine that, someone asking you how to spend your money. Now that’s a novel idea.
Maine is not business-friendly, and our young people are leaving the state in droves. I can’t blame them one bit. If I were a bit younger, I’d go, too. Let’s act for a change.
