WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. (AP) – An arson suspect who told police she suffers from multiple personality disorder has been deemed competent to stand trial.
Cheryle Potwin, 49, of Sharon, is accused of setting a Sept. 29 fire in a Woodstock home and is being investigated in connection with several other fires in the region, including one that burned down the home of a New Hampshire judge, according to authorities.
That fire occurred in Plainfield, N.H., and New Hampshire fire investigators are cooperating with Vermont authorities in the probe.
Potwin told police after she was arrested that she has nine different personalities.
She is charged with burglary and attempted first-degree arson in the Woodstock fire and is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
Dr. Margaret Bolton, a psychiatrist, has determined that Potwin understands the charges against her and is capable of helping in her defense, said Windsor County State’s Attorney Robert Sand.
Vermont District Court Judge Robert Bent has not set a trial date.
