Many complaints have been made concerning the Lewiston street lights and the irregularity in which some of the lights are kept burning. In the upper section of the city the lights are even more uncertain than the weather and many a night some of the principal streets have been in darkness to the inconvenience of the residents. The cause of this trouble is said to be a broken down dynamo which feeds the Main street circuit. This dynamo has been out of commission much of the time, it is said.
50 Years Ago, 1956
A spectacular fire destroyed the main building of the George Hall & Sons canning factory here. Fire Chief Preston Richardson estimated damage at approximately $275,000. The plant, which employs up to 125 in the summer months, was closed for the season, Richardson said the blaze started in the center of the main building where canning machinery was located.
A snowfall so heavy it buried cars and caved in some roofs staggered a broad area at the eastern end of the Great Lakes. As the storm eased, snowplows and rescue crews labored to cut through drifts that ranged up to seven feet in depth.
25 Years Ago, 1981
The coffee was steaming for the opening of the new Sun Journal office on Main Street in Norway. Members of the community were invited to have a free cup and a doughnut to celebrate. About 45 had responded by noon and the bustle continued in mid-afternoon, as Phyllis Dow and Esther Farnum of the office staff busily took ads and news items while showing the three-room location to members of the public. Positioned across from Longley’s, in the former Family Fabrics building, the Sun-Journal is part of the busy commercial activity of Norway’s Main Street, a perfect base from which to service Sun advertisers in the district covered by the Sun second edition.
