Lewiston student receives citation

LEWISTON – All heads pivoted toward Lewiston High School student Rebecca Grube on Nov. 21 when Mayor Lionel Guay Jr. mentioned “leading the second violin section of the Androscoggin Valley Community Orchestra.”

Guay and members of the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council approached Grube while she was in teacher Rebecca Poppke’s women’s chorale class to present the November Mayoral Citation of Excellence.

Grube was recognized for her exemplary musical abilities, and Guay continued, “Rebecca, you are commended for leading the ‘second violin section’ of the Androscoggin Valley Community Orchestra’s Children’s Concert on Nov. 5, 2006. In addition, your continued musical commitment to the orchestra, school activities and area events is both an asset to this community and greatly admired by your fellow musicians. You are also to be applauded for your demonstrated sense of responsibility and attention to detail.”

Students broke into applause as a smiling Grube made her way to the front of the class to shake the mayor’s hand.

Each month, the mayoral citation is given to a Lewiston middle school or high school student, and nominations for the December citation are due no later than Friday, Dec. 8. A one-page nomination must be included on an achievement or accomplishment deemed as “above and beyond” or “extraordinary” that has occurred within the last two months.

Nominations may be submitted to Guay at 27 Pine St., Lewiston, ME 04240, or via dottie@ci.lewiston.me.us.

After reviewing nominations, Guay and the youth council will decide on a recipient, and the presentation will be made later in December at the youth’s school.
