LEWISTON — The hockey was less than stellar – sloppy at times — but it didn’t matter.
The Lewiston Maineiacs got goals from six different skaters and Peter Delmas earned a win in his first home start to lead the team to a 6-1 win over the hapless Saint John Sea Dogs in front of 2,773 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Saturday night.
The win runs the Maineiacs streak of consecutive victories to 10 games. The streak is the longest in the league this season, and the longest since Quebec ran off 14 straight from February 2 to March 3 last season.
“Everything (during the streak) is us, us, us,” said Maineiacs coach Clem Jodoin. “We aren’t focusing on the other teams at all. Our target is us, how we do this, how we do that. I don’t care about the streak. I’ll be impressed if the team keeps working. That’s what impresses me. If we keep working, we can win games.”
“It’s always fun to win,” echoed Maineiacs’ assistant captain Marc-Andre Daneau, who led all point-getters with three. “But we do focus on us every night. That is the most important thing.”
The Sea Dogs, meanwhile, are still languishing in the cellar of the Eastern Conference with nine wins and just 20 points in 27 games, and have lost four games in a row.
“They got shots early, but they were from the outside,” said Saint John coach Jacques Beaulieu. “Our plan was to come in here and trap and take the middle away to try and take away their speed.”
Delmas, who had started five road games previous to Saturday, won his fourth game of the season with 25 saves.
“I think I was a little bit more nervous than some of the games I’ve already played,” said the 16-year-old rookie. “I felt a little weird going out, but after the first period I was fine.”
The Maineiacs dominated an uneventful first period territorially, but in many cases made an extra pass — or an errant one — and made more trouble.
“We came out slow a little bit,” said Jodoin. “But we picked it up, got it going, got it going. We’re asking them, they’re kids, we’re asking them to play a big game (Friday night), come back and play a second game (Saturday) and then play a third game (today) in less than 60 hours. That’s hard for anyone to do.”
Michal Korenko flipped a wrist shot toward the net through a maze of legs that skipped just in front of the crease and through goalie Maxime Joyal’s pads at 15:26 to put the Maineiacs ahead 1-0.
David Perron finished off a cycle down low with a quick wrist shot from in close at 9:44 of the second, and that effectively opened the floodgates for Lewiston.
Stefano Giliati scored his fourth short-handed goal of the season — on a penalty shot — at 14:33 to make it 3-0. Stefan Chaput added the team’s fourth at 17:09 and Pierre-Luc Faubert produced a spin-o-rama goal with 30 seconds to play in the middle frame to put the Maineiacs ahead by five.
Daneau continued on his torrid scoring pace, following two earlier assists with his third goal in two games at 4:07 of the third period.
Jonathan Laberge broke up Delmas’ shutout bid at 4:56 with his 11th of the season on a shot from the middle of a slot.
“I went down, but by the time I saw it, it was too late,” said Delmas.
Lewiston will play its third game in three days this afternoon in Victoriaville against the Tigres, who have lost just twice in 13 home games this season despite an overall record of just 14-12.
