After reading about the school bus accident in Alabama (Sun Journal Nov. 21), I picked up on that there were no seatbelts on the bus. As a school bus driver, I would like to point out what could have happened in this situation.
As I see the bus, there is no access to the bus from the front. The emergency window probably cannot be opened. The only way is the rear door. How many rescue people could enter to cut seat belts and remove the injured from the bus? How many had back injuries caused by the seatbelt’s impact on their body? Some might have had broken backs. Rescue personnel would have to remove them, and others would have to wait hanging from their seatbelts.
Luck would have it this school bus did not catch fire. What a tragedy this would have been.
