FRYEBURG – Police searched for a wounded woman for nearly two hours Monday afternoon before learning she had admitted herself into a New Hampshire hospital.

Fryeburg police Lt. Michael McAllister said witnesses reported Jessica Putnam, who is in her mid-30s, was arguing with her boyfriend before she cut at least one of her arms. She then left a Harbor Road residence where she had been staying.

Witnesses called for help.

“We didn’t have a clear-cut idea of how badly she was injured, and it was getting colder,” McAllister said.

Besides McAllister, three other Fryeburg police officers, a state trooper with a dog, and rescue and fire officials fanned out over a one-square-mile area searching for the woman.

Police also called local hospitals to see if she had gone to emergency rooms.

Around 5 p.m., The Memorial Hospital in North Conway, N.H., called police to let them know Putnam had showed up.

A nurse in the emergency room reached after 6 p.m. said Putnam was being treated and would likely be released later in the evening.

“She ended up getting herself to the hospital,” McAllister said. “We ended up wandering through the countryside for nothing.”

McAllister said Putnam managed to travel to the town center in Fryeburg, either by hitchhiking or with a friend, and then received a ride to the hospital.

Her age, place of residence and exact injury were not available from authorities Monday.
