SOUTH PORTLAND – The American Cancer Society’s annual volunteer celebration dinner was held recently at the Marriott Sable Oaks in South Portland. Hannaford Supermarkets is the recipient of two 2006 American Cancer Society Special Recognition Awards for its contributions to Daffodil Days and Relay For Life. Chip Ridlon accepted the award on behalf of Hannaford.

“Hannaford Supermarkets is a longtime partner with the American Cancer Society,” said Allan Rowe, vice president of development. “They run a register program in which they ‘sell’ daffodils at grocery store registers throughout Maine during the week of Daffodil Days. This year their sales totaled nearly $36,000, and the entire amount was donated to the American Cancer Society. In addition, Hannaford sponsored Relay For Life events in seven Maine locations this year. They also encouraged teams of their employees to participate in these events, and some teams provided meals or offered other methods of fundraising onsite.”

The American Cancer Society recognizes individual volunteers, businesses and media outlets who make significant contributions to the overall success of its fundraising and educational events throughout the year. The awards are given annually to recognize and honor New England volunteers whose actions and service in the fight against cancer most exemplify the society’s values.
