FARMINGTON – Wreaths are going up, and trees cut down. Skis and snow tires, winter coats and earmuffs are being taken out of storage. Still, the mercury hovers stubbornly above freezing. The only thing falling from the sky is rain.

But no matter the weather this weekend, earmuffs, at any rate, will be in vogue in Farmington on Saturday. Much of the town is expected to turn out for the 30th annual observation of Chester Greenwood Day, celebrating the Farmington teen who thought up earmuffs and went on to become a well-known inventor.

“Oh heavens,” Franklin County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lorna Nichols said Tuesday. “I think we’re going to have a really big parade, because my phone has been ringing off the wall.”

In addition to the usual parade, flag raising, and birthday cake, the Ski Museum of Maine will be holding a grand opening in the Church Street Commons beginning at 10 a.m. A festival of trees at the Granary starts at 9 a.m., a chili contest begins at noon, and caroling, buggy rides, a wreath sale, a food drive, and an Operation Santa Claus giving tree display go on all day. Not to mention the 20th annual Polar Bear Dip.

Listed as a Boston Globe Pick of the Week this year, the event may attract more visitors than usual Saturday, Nichols said. “Whew, we’re big time – very festive,” she said. A family of unicyclists from out of state even called recently about taking part in the parade, she said.
