PORTLAND – Lillian M. Bagley, 93, of Portland and formerly of Starboard Drive, Cape Elizabeth, died Sunday, Nov. 26, at Portland’s Seaside Nursing Home.
She was born in South Portland, Feb. 17, 1913, the only daughter of Daniel Evan and Emma Frances Apt MacCormack. On the death of her mother, she was raised by her aunt, A. Pearl and uncle, G. Galen Twitchell in Willard Square, South Portland.
She graduated from South Portland High School, Class of 1932, and Portland’s Maine School of Commerce in 1934. She worked for many years at Casco Bank and Trust as switchboard operator and stenographer.
She married Philip S. Bagley on Jan. 22, 1938 in Milford, Mass. They were married for 49 years and lived in Cape Elizabeth. They were true partners, operating Cape businesses, a truck garden farm and “Pond House Farm Market” on Fowler Road. They were the first in the area to have pick-your-own strawberries (25 cents a quart!) and in winters, with five employees, packed vegetables in cellophane bags ready for market, selling to First National Stores, Carr Brothers, Milliken Tomlinson and Burnham and Morrill.
In the 1960s they built and ran “The Bagley’s Grocery Store and Snack Bar” on Ocean House Road, where her cooking became known to residents and workmen alike. Then Lil and Phil built her dream next door, the restaurant “The Carriage Trade,” open 364 days a year, three meals a day, until their retirement. They gave many Capers their first employment, with Lillian treating each like family.
Retiring, they were the first to move into Starboard development. She continued to knit, embroider, cook and visit and help friends and relatives. After moving into Cape Elizabeth Home, she began to draw, making her own Christmas cards. She was a Granger and Senior Citizen club member. She enjoyed living in West Poland for several years and attended Poland Community Church and its Ladies Guild. With the onset of Alzheimer’s, she resided at Dolly Farm and then Seaside Nursing Home, where she enjoyed music and made new friends. The family thanks all who lovingly cared for her.
She leaves a daughter, Linda Ann, and her husband, John E. Laskey, of West Poland; a son, George Galen Bagley, and his wife, Gale Stauber, of Livonia, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Allyson June, and her husband, Steve Dame, of West Poland, Sally Jean Laskey of Harrisburg, Pa., Seth Bagley, and his wife, Diane and Jay Philip Bagley, and his wife, Sue, all of Livonia, N.Y.; five great-grandchildren, Dana, Alicia, Anita, Adam and Colin; one great-great-grandson, Darnell; and many nieces and nephews of whom she was proud.
She was predeceased by her brother, Leaman Ellery MacCormack and his son; half-sisters, and brothers, Virginia, Edward, Richard, Marion and Joan; all of her sisters and brothers-in-law; and special friends, the Mitchells, the Bud Murrays, the R. Jordans and Alta Curtis.
