Legion meeting

RUMFORD – American Legion Post 24 and Auxiliary of Rumford will meet Sunday, Dec. 3, at the post home, Congress Street. Lunch will be served at 5 p.m., with meetings to follow. Auxiliary members are reminded to bring canned goods for the church pantry.

Memorial service

RUMFORD – Rumford Elks Lodge officers and members will give tribute to members who died during 2006 on Sunday, Dec. 3. There will be a memorial service at 9 a.m. at the lodge, which will be open to all family members and friends.

A brunch will be served in the lodge dining room after for all who attend. Anyone in need of transportation should call the lodge at 364-4022 and arrangements will be made.

The following members will be honored: Phil Anastasio, Leonide Arsenault, Arthur Breau, Matthew Clark, Joseph B. Gaudet, Richard Horne, John Law, Larry Vienneau and Gordon Wentzell.

Club to meet

ROXBURY – The Slippery Sliders Snowmobile Club will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, at the home of Raymond and Sylvia Touchette.

Bottle drive

CANTON – The Canton Cruisers Relay For Life team will hold a bottle drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Canton Municipal Building, 28 Cross St. All proceeds from cans and bottles will benefit Relay For Life. For more information, call Sherri at 597-2019 or Kathy at 597-2139.

Church fair

RUMFORD – St. Athanasius and St. John’s Christmas fair will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2. The fair will feature Christmas wreaths, kissing balls, holiday crafts, attic treasures, handmade items, quilt raffle, Chinese auction, fudge, cookies and pies.

A turkey lunch will be available and may be eaten there or ordered to go. Luncheon prices are $6 adults and $4 for seniors/children. This year a new children’s craft and fun center and a teacher’s wish list giving tree will be featured.

Acadian sale

RUMFORD – The Acadian Society is having a takeout holiday poutine sale to benefit the Dr. Edward Martin Book Scholarship Fund. Residents must order before Thursday, Dec. 14, by calling 364-4629 between 5 and 9 p.m. Poutines will be ready to pick up at 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, at the St. Athanasius St. John Parish Center.

Children’s party

DIXFIELD – Dixfield American Legion will hold its children’s Christmas party from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, at the American Legion Hall. Children can visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus and with Santa’s Elf. Santa will also give out gifts to all area children from grades kindergarten through five.

Raffle drawing

RUMFORD – Pennacook Art Center will draw the winner for the ring raffle at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, during the First-Friday reception. The ring is a handcrafted tourmaline by Bob Daigle with a value of $580. The raffle tickets cost $5 each and have been on sale at the gallery since last June. They will be for sale up until the time of the drawing.

The gallery’s theme for December is “Holidays at Pennacook.”

Class to meet

MEXICO – Members of the Stephens High School Class of 1949 will meet for luncheon at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, at the Chicken Coop. Attendees are asked to bring a wrapped Christmas tree ornament for exchange.

Crafters invited

ANDOVER – Crafters are invited to participate in a craft fair to be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at the Andover Fire Station. Santa will arrive at the fair at 1 p.m. To reserve a space, crafters may call Elaine at 392-1140.

Grange fair

RUMFORD – Rumford Grange 115 will hold a craft and food sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at the grange hall in Rumford Center. A lunch of corn chowder will also be sold. Anyone who would like to rent a table for $7 may call Vicki Ann Clark at 364-2129.

Special weekend

BETHEL – The congregation of the Bethel United Methodist Church is planning a special “Reason for the Season” weekend for Dec. 9 and 10 to celebrate Advent and the Christmas holiday. Special events are being planned.

Following a public supper on Saturday, Dec. 9, a memorial Christmas tree will be lighted. Anyone who would like to honor or memorialize someone is invited to purchase a light on the tree. Names of those honored will be read at the ceremony, which will be held at 6:30 p.m.

A Christmas program for children will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, at the church. All area children are invited. Regular Sunday worship will follow at 10:30 a.m.

Anyone who would like to light up someone’s life or remember a loved one this holiday season may sent $5 for each Christmas light, including the name of the person to be honored, to Bethel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 387, Bethel, ME 04217. For more information, call Musa at 824-2483.

Turkey dinner

RUMFORD – A homemade turkey dinner will be offered starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at the Blazing Star Lodge, Route 232. The menu includes mashed potatoes, vegetables, gravy, cranberry sauce, rolls, cake and ice cream.

Following the meal, a Gift-O-Rama will be held where participants can take chances on dozens or prizes.

Meal prizes are $6 and gift chances are $1 each or six for $5. The event is sponsored by Mt. Zircon 142 Star Club.

Legion meal

RUMFORD – American Legion Post 24 will serve chicken with gravy and rice, vegetable and dessert from 5 p.m. until sold out on Thursday, Dec. 7, at the hall. The meal, $6, is open to the public and members. Take-out meals are available by calling ahead.

New Year’s Eve tickets are on sale from noon to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday at the Legion. Music will be provided by the Hooligans. For more information, call 369-9053.
