NORWAY – Katherine Eliza Hakala, 83, peacefully passed away with her children by her side Tuesday, Nov. 28, at Norway Rehabilitation & Living Center.

She was born on April 18, 1923, on Young Hill in Greenwood, the daughter of Chester and Katherine (Gregg) Morey. She married Stanley Hakala on May 24, 1944. He died July 25, 1984.

She was a homemaker and worked as a housekeeper at Stephens Memorial Hospital and Chapel Valley Nursing Home. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Granite Chapter for 50-plus years, and was a volunteer for Tri-Town Rescue. She could always be counted on for providing baked goods for Tri-Town, Eastern Star and legion fundraisers.

Known to her many friends, family and others as “Kate,” “Aunt Kitty,” “Mammie” and “Nana,” she will be sadly missed. She warmed the hearts and feet of many family members and friends with her sought after hand-knit socks.

She is survived by her six children, Wayne Hakala, and his wife, Anita, of Greenwood, Raymond Hakala, and his wife, Noreen, of South Paris, Stephen Hakala, and his wife, Anita, of Norway, Judith Hakala, and her fiancé, Michael Tunstall, of Lincoln, N.H., Timothy Hakala, and his wife, Cindy, of Harrison and Karen Hakala, and her husband, Timothy Hutchisen, of Norway; grandsons, Lee, Chris, Seth, Stephen and Tyler; granddaughters, Allyson, Sarah, Hannah and Krista; great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Bailey, Kaitlyn, Will and Logan; many nieces and nephews; two sisters, Marie Kilponen and Joyce Ham; and two brothers, Ivan and Roland.

She was predeceased by her father; mother; husband; brothers, Lloyd and Donald; and sister, Barbara Patten.
