AUBURN – Robert G. Hamel, 56, a resident of Fayette Road in Livermore Falls, passed away Thursday, Nov. 23, at Androscoggin Hospice House, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on Feb. 3, 1950, in Springfield, Mass., the son of Roger and Rita (Gauvin) Hamel. He attended schools in Springfield, Mass., and furthered his education at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y. During his school years, Bob excelled in sports, including ice hockey, football and golf.

He worked in New York City and Boston as a general credit manager for several large corporations, including Gulf and Western Industries in New York City. In 1983, he moved to Maine and accepted a position with Phillips-Van Heusen for the G.H. Bass and Co. division in Wilton. In 1987, he married Marie L’Italien of Jay in Gorham, N.H.

He had many diverse interests including woodworking, hiking and literature, with a special love of poetry and philosophy. His family, especially the grandchildren, were a very important part of his life. He spent many happy hours with them, playing, reading and teaching them. He was a very special husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Hamel of Livermore Falls; his father, Roger Hamel of Springfield, Mass.; a daughter, Janelle Roy, and her husband, Christopher, of Rutland, Mass.; two step-daughters, Andrea Presby of Livermore Falls and Laura Aube, and her husband, Thomas, of Readfield; two brothers, Paul Hamel of Florida and Norman Hamel of Massachusetts; and five grandchildren, Miranda Roy, Olivia Roy, Ayla Presby, William Shank and Elizabeth Aube.

He was predeceased by his mother.

The family would like to thank the staff at Androscoggin Hospice House for the exceptional care given to Robert during his stay.
