AUBURN – One of the city’s oldest railway stations is getting a face-lift.

Berenyi Properties, a Sanford-based developer, bought the long, 179 High St. building a couple of months ago. Located at the corner of High Street and Minot Avenue, next to the Village Inn Restaurant, the building most recently housed a pawn shop and used furniture store.

The new owners are refurbishing the property and plan to move in five commercial and retail tenants, including a restaurant.

“We’re going to turn it back into looking like one of the nice train depots,” said John Morrison, managing partner on the project.

Once called The Station, the property has now been dubbed High Street Crossing.

Built in the early 1900s, the building was used as a railway station by Burnham and Morrill Canned Goods, according to Michael Lord at the Androscoggin Historical Society. In recent years, however, it was used for storage and retail. At one point the century-old building stood largely empty, and it became run-down.

Maureen Aube, Auburn’s business support specialist, said city officials are “ecstatic” the new owners are refurbishing the old building, particularly since it sits at the gateway to Auburn.

“It will be a shining star in our cap,” she said.

The new owners are now talking with businesses interested in setting up shop at High Street Crossing, but Morrison declined to give details. They hope to open in January, Aube said.

The city will formally announce the creation of High Street Crossing at the site next Wednesday.
