The six year old daughter of William C. Dawes of Goff street, Auburn, is seriously ill of scarlet fever. The house has been quarantined and the Board of Health will take every precaution against the spread of the disease.
It is estimated that the Great Northern Paper company has 2000 men at work in the lumber woods this winter. The average pay of these men is $26 a month and board.
The steamship Laona of the Thompson line sailed from Portland for London with a cargo of 72,000 bushels of oats. In addition the steamship carried 20 head of cattle and 10 carloads of refrigerator meats, 10 cars of apples and a general cargo of flour, etc.

Local fuel oil prices went up four-tenths of a cent about a month ago, and there is a question of whether the price again might increase slightly because of increased U. S. oil shipments to Western Europe. The present fuel oil price is 14.7 cents a gallon at most fuel companies.
Auburn Recreation Director Harry Jones Jr. said there will be no organized skating at Pettengill (sic) Park. Jones disclosed that an inspection at the Pettengill skating rink showed the ice at its strongest point is only three inches thick, much too thin to support the weight of a group of skaters.

Some deer hunters in Maine may have discovered a large “No Trespassing” sign blocking their path to their favorite hunting spot this past season. According to a safety officer with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, there is a growing trend among the state’s landowners to post their land. “I would assume there has been an increase over the years,” said Gareth S. Anderson of the department. Anderson said a 1968 survey showed that one million acres in the state had been posted against trespassing, equivalent to the combined areas of Kennebec and Cumberland Counties.
