This is in response to Chris Caron’s letter Nov. 27 about Rep. Charles Rangel’s (D-N.Y.) recommendation to reinstitute the military draft.
Most people cannot remenber how much better this country was with a draft. There wasn’t all the violence that there is now. Military service makes men out of boys, while giving the wild, younger generation an opportunity to get some extra education or learn a trade. Plus, service helps the country in these hard times.
I am a veteran of 20 years. I joined the Air Force right out of high school because no jobs were available. I had been in the National Guard for two years while in school. I felt it was a way for me to serve my country and help myself with knowledge. It worked for my benefit. I did 2 tours in Vietnam. If I were asked to do it again, I surely would. I have seen both sides of the oceans.
Military service is a education in proper discipline and respect for others.
I hope that this country does go back to the draft.
