TOGUS – Fred V. Quintal, 85, formerly of 8 Hartley St., Lewiston, died Friday, Dec. 1, at the Togus Veterans Hospital.
He was born in Chelsea on Feb. 17, 1921, the son of Victor and Blanche Lebeau Quintal. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Fred married the former Mary B. (Rita) Cote on April 30, 1946, and moved to Lewiston in 1962. The couple trained horses at Lewiston Raceway, where he was self-employed.
He loved his wife dearly, and he clearly was never the same after his best friend was no longer by his side. The time he spent with family and friends was what he lived for and enjoyed the most, whether it was playing cards, going to the horse races, getting coffee ice cream at the Dairy Joy, playing practical jokes or the way he would sing “Happy Birthday,” the trips he took to Florida to be with his brother, Ernest, and his sister, Bella, or going to lunch with his brother, Paul.
He enjoyed dancing, whether it was at a special event or home with family and friends. He never got enough of watching TV, especially football and car racing. He always had the remote, and everyone knew better than to try and get it from him. Fred will be remembered for his great sense of humor, quiet gentle nature, and the love and generosity he showed to his family.
He is survived by his daughters, Suzanne Tremblay and Michelle Quintal, both of Lewiston; his granddaughters, Ashley Lessard and Taylor Matthews; his sisters, Bella Merrill of Caribou and Jeannette Callnan of Bridgton; his brothers, Ernest of Florida, Paul of Augusta, Wilfred of Lewiston, Roland of New Hampshire and George of Gardiner.
He was predeceased by his wife in 1989; a daughter, Roxanne Fitch, in 1973; his sisters, Connie Larochelle and Julia Buckmore; and his brothers, Henry and Edward Quintal.
