DURHAM – A 33-year-old Auburn man, Jeffrey Bell of Pownal Road, was trapped in his pickup truck on Route 136 early Saturday morning after falling asleep while driving home from work, according to Androscoggin County Deputy Sheriff Craig MacMillan.

He was taken to Central Maine Medical Center with unspecified injuries. However, a hospital spokesman declined to confirm or deny that Bell admitted or treated at that facility.

Personnel from Durham Fire and Rescue had to cut the roof and door off Bell’s truck and use a spreader to pull the dashboard back, to extricate the driver who was conscious and talking with them, MacMillan said. He commended Durham Fire and Rescue for a “fantastic job working effectively and quickly to free the victim.”

He said Bell was heading north on Route 136 when he fell asleep and his truck crossed the oncoming lane, missing several trees before coming to a stop on a large rock.

Bell’s 2004 Ford Ranger was demolished in the 5:10 a.m. crash.
