NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) — A $500,000 gift by an unnamed donor has given supporters of a proposed military museum and memorial park at the former Quonset Point Naval Air Station half of what they need to begin construction.
The $11 million attraction will feature the retired aircraft carrier USS Saratoga.
The project recently received a $6.5 million federal loan guarantee and the North Kingstown-based museum had raised about $3.5 million, The Providence Journal reported. With $1 million left to raise, the donation, given by a benefactor who asked not to be identified, cuts the project’s shortfall in half.
“Our benefactor has watched our progress closely over the years, and is now convinced this project can and will happen,” said Frank Lennon, president of the USS Saratoga Museum Foundation.
