Being an embittered Vietnam veteran, I am always skeptical when politicians show up at Memorial and Veterans Day ceremonies. I wonder if they are there to pay homage to the sacrifice and dedication rendered this country by our past and present veterans, or promoting themselves.
This year’s Veterans Day remembrance gave a clear answer to the motives of three local politicians.
Sen. Peggy Rotundo and Rep. Elaine Makas attend these remembrances year after year. They melt into the crowd, seeking no recognition, although organizers seek out Sen. Rotundo to say a few words. During this year’s ceremonies, Sen. Rotundo helped us put away chairs long after the crowds had left.
Current Lewiston mayoral candidate Laurent Gilbert is another story. Over the years, I cannot ever remember seeing him at either function. However, this year, at the start of what appears to be an abbreviated election season, he shamelessly showed up at the Armory, planting himself in the middle of the floor so all in attendance could see him.
To use such a solemn event to draw attention to one’s campaign speaks volumes about one’s character, or lack thereof.
