LEWISTON – Robert Caron, 85, of 14 Atwood St., passed away Saturday at his home with his family by his side.
Born in St. Paul de LaCroix, P.Q., Canada, on May 5, 1921, a son of George and Alida Gagnon Caron, he was educated in Lewiston schools.
He served as a medic in the U. S. Army during World War II in the Europe and South Pacific theaters of operations.
On Nov. 11, 1946, he was married to the former Jeanne d’Arc Frechette. She died Jan. 19, 2006.
He was a member of Holy Family Parish.
He owned and operated Caron Ice, before working as a millwright in Jay and Bates College. He also owned Caron’s Garage, where he worked as a mechanic. He later owned Spudnut Donut Shop. In 1975, he started Caron’s Electrical, where he worked until his retirement.
He was also a member of the Montagnard Club.
He served on the city council in Lewiston as alderman in Ward 2 and 4 as well as on the Lewiston High School Building Committee.
He volunteered as a loan officer at Holy Family Credit Union and was instrumental in forming the Holy Family Booster Club. He also was a Director for the L & A Twins Hockey Team.
He enjoyed bowling, hockey, playing cards, tinkering in his workshop, traveling and watching his grandchildren play sports.
He is survived by a daughter, Ann-Marie Caron of Lewiston; his sons, Michael Caron and his wife, Alison, of Northford, Conn., and Paul Caron and companion, Sheryl Bradley, of Auburn; his daughter-in-law, Romana Caron of Lewiston; his grandchildren, Nicholas Caron, Jennifer and husband, Jared Lane, and Kimberly, Robert and Christopher Caron; his sisters, Lucienne Nault of Auburn, and Cecile Zittel of Florida; and his brothers, Bertrand and wife, Joanne, of Lewiston, Armand and wife, Aimee, of Lewiston.
He was predeceased by his wife; his parents; a sister, Armandine Vaillancourt; and brothers, Emilien and Albert Caron.
The family would like to thank Androscoggin Home Health and Hospice for their excellent care during Mr. Caron’s illness.
