BUCKFIELD – The Buckfield Junior-Senior High School gymnasium was filled Saturday with people perusing more than 40 booths offering homemade crafts.
The fair was sponsored by the Nezinscot Valley Music Boosters and was possibly the largest ever, according to Meghan Andrews-Wright, organizer and elementary music director.
Almost every club in the school was represented. The Spanish class had a booth of crafts to help raise money for Emily Lavine to take a trip to Costa Rica where she plans to volunteer at nursing homes and day-care centers.
There were some outside groups, such as Laos Hand Crafts from Jay that had a table filled with hand-made crafts from Laos.
Stained glass picture frames were available as well as photos placed in stained glass stars. Hartford Community Church had a table offering many crafts and there were other local craft people.
Santa roamed through the crowd and live music was provided by several school ensembles and a group called Bellavoce. This a cappella group is composed mostly of music teachers from the area: Meghan Andrews-Wright, the SAD 39 elementary music teacher; Sarah Johnson, music teacher in Paris; Erica Troy, kindergarten and first-grade music teacher in Yarmouth; Dorothy Carsley, Lisbon teacher; and Renovia Marro, who teaches music in Falmouth.
The group sang together all through college, and after graduation, wanted to continue singing so they formed the Bellavoce. They can be heard in concert at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31, at the South Paris Congregational Church.
Another delight of the fair were provisions for children to make gingerbread houses. Students assisted the young ones in putting together unusual creations.
The Nezinscot Valley Music Boosters is a nonprofit organization that supports music in SAD 39. It raises funds to support the music program where school or district funds are not available, and provides scholarships for music opportunities and special music enrichment opportunities in the schools.
