NEW YORK – An Army ordinance expert said today the massive force which ripped apart a flaming Brooklyn pier was caused by “a single concentrated blast” more powerful than a two-ton bomb. Yesterday’s explosion claimed its tenth victim today with the death in a hospital of a fourth little boy who had been watching the big fire that preceded the blast. The number injured, mostly spectators, was 246.
• Thoroughbred racing in the United States is becoming more popular and more honest, the men who own and operate race tracks were told in convention today. Attendance at races has tripled in the last 15 years with major advances in wagering, state revenues and stakes paid, President Afory L. Haskell reported as the Thoroughbred Racing Associations of the United States, Inc., opened a three-day convention.

As the federal government trims its list of hazardous materials, Maine’s source of funds to clean up hazardous waste sites shrinks, a state official says.
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection will soon begin collecting fees for each gallon of hazardous material that companies generate, store, treat or transport in the state.
