TURNER – Both the current and the new town office will have a camera security system, selectmen decided 4-1 Monday night.

Town Manager James Catlin informed the board of competing systems and costs, and members opted for the four-camera system proposed by Business Elite Inc. of Lewiston for $2,495, with Selectman Lawrence House opposed.

House favored not installing the security system in the present office, preferring to wait to install it in the new town office. Other selectmen mentioned recent events in the town office when security was an issue and preferred to get the system operational.

The board discussed proposed dispatch services for Androscoggin County communities, proposals that find the cities of Lewiston and Auburn favoring a centralized system in Auburn, while the smaller communities favor placing a centralized system with the county sheriff’s department. The cities are served by their own system and most of the towns by the sheriff’s department.

Turner’s two representatives to a committee considering the issue, Selectman and paramedic Charlie Mock and fire Chief Mike Arsenault, have promised to keep the board informed of the committee’s work.

Selectmen are concerned because Turner’s shared cost of a system located in Auburn would be about $68,000 a year. Continuing Turner’s dispatching for fire and rescue with the sheriff, which is acknowledged to be satisfactory, would be under $10,000 a year, even factoring in the town’s share of major upgrades to the sheriff’s equipment.

In other matters, the board gave Catlin a directive to contract with a private billing and collection agency to obtain payments for fire department responses to vehicle accidents.

Saturday, April 14, was set for town meeting 2007, with elections held on Friday the 13th. Chairman Dennis Richardson stands for re-election in 2007 and indicated he will run again, as did longtime incumbent Henry Gibbert.

The board increased the fee for bad checks for payment for town services from $15 to $25.

Members mentioned three or four local residents they will contact and ask to serve on a SAD 52 selection committee to find a superintendent to replace the retiring Thomas Hanson.
