MECHANIC FALLS – The town council agreed Monday night that the policies governing the waste transfer station must be enforced.

“We are still having problems at the transfer station with people who are refusing to purchase stickers or who are not recycling out their plastics, glass, aluminum and so forth,” said Town Manager John Hawley.

Hawley explained that last summer, he asked transfer station manager Bob Abbott to make sure that all vehicles entering the transfer station had valid stickers and to check that people were separating their recyclables.

The intent, Hawley said, is to save the town money by prolonging the life of the landfill.

Nonetheless, according to Hawley, Abbott and his men are still taking verbal abuse for their efforts to enforce town policy.

“We have to back the guys at the transfer station,” said Councilman Roger Guptil.

Council members set Jan. 1 as the drop-dead date for compliance with the sticker policy and for charging per bag for non-recycled material.

Hawley said that during December, flyers will be handed out informing people that effective the new year, they will be turned away if they aren’t in compliance with town policy.

After a public hearing that drew no comment, the council adopted the Planning Board’s recommendation for revisions to the flood-plain-management ordinance as well as amendments to the town’s land-use and zoning ordinance.

The council also approved Bog Hooters Snowmobile Club’s request to allow snowmobile trail access to the village using short portions of Mitchell and Summer streets in the vicinity of Roscoe’s Rockin’ Railroad Buffet.

The council appointed Guptil, Michael Needham and Lawrence Newth to the charter commission.

The three council appointees and the six residents that were elected Nov. 7 are expected to begin work revising the charter in January in order to present their recommendations for voter approval at May town meeting.

The next council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 2 at the municipal building.
