TORONTO (AP) – Hundreds of friends, relatives and teammates packed a church Tuesday to remember Michael Serba, a former U.S. college hockey star who died last week after an attack outside a Toronto bar.

Two chartered buses carried teammates and students from Norwich University, in Northfield, Vt., where Serba had been captain of the hockey team.

He graduated in the spring and had returned to Norwich this year to pursue graduate studies.

Serba was remembered Tuesday as a doting big brother who loved to joke around and entertain his friends.

“He was a complete young man,” his former coach, Michael McShane, said after the funeral. “He had everything going for him. He was well-mannered, intelligent, a great athlete and just a pleasure to be around.”

The 25-year-old was in town visiting for the U.S. Thanksgiving weekend when he was struck, possibly with a brick, while leaving a bar.

Nicholas Crowdis, 22, has been charged with second-degree murder in Serba’s death.
