MACHIAS – Charlie Callagin netted 20 points Tuesday evening to pace the University of Maine at Machias to a narrow 70-68 victory over the University of Maine at Augusta in men’s basketball.

Anthony McCoy chipped in for UMM (4-6) with 17 points, while Adam Pearce added 12. Machias held a 10-point advantage at the half and never trailed.

UMA was paced by Dion Cheers with a game-high 23 points, while John Hill added 13.

Women’s basketball

Maine Maritime 69, Husson 53

CASTINE – Julia Knights tallied a game-high 18 points and hauled down 10 rebounds as Maine Maritime rolled past Husson 69-53 in women’s basketball action Tuesday.

Rebecca Moore and Shely Gott-Stilwell chipped in for the Mariners with 12 points apiece, while Alyssa Burns added 10 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.

Husson was paced by Jodie Merchant with a 14-point performance, while Holly Gracie was the only other Eagle to reach double figures with 11 points.

Field hockey

Healy named captain at Maine

ORONO – University of Maine field hockey coach Andrea Thebarge selected Erin Reusch and Turner native Kristen Healy to serve as captains for the 2007 season.

Both players will serve as captains for the first time.

Healy, a back, has seen action in 58 career games for the Black Bears. She has one goal and two assists for four career points. She scored an unassisted goal which turned out the be the game-winner in Maine’s 1-0 victory over Cornell this past season. Healy has been named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I National Academic squad, the America East Academic Honor Roll ands also named a UMaine Scholar-Athlete Award winner.

Reusch has seen action in 55 career games and has one goal and two assists for four points. She started all 19 games for the Black Bears in 2006 and scored a goal in Maine’s victory over Sacred Heart in the season opener.
