LETTER E TOWNSHIP – A Peru man faces several charges after the car he was driving went off Route 4 Wednesday morning, over an embankment and got lodged against a tree that prevented it from going into the Sandy River, a state trooper said Wednesday.

Norbert Thibault, 43, left the scene of the accident walking, as police were responding to the accident, State Trooper Scott Stevens said.

Police received several calls, including one from Bear Hill Variety in Phillips, that reported a man who was intoxicated was trying to get a ride after the accident call was broadcast on the police radio, Stevens said.

Thibault, who had been drinking and was out on bail on another charge, hitchhiked and was picked up by a vehicle with a man and a woman in it in Avon, he said.

Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy Ken Charles stopped the vehicle in Farmington, he said.

Charles arrested Thibault on charges of violation of bail conditions and assault stemming from pulling the woman’s hair in the vehicle, Stevens said.

Stevens charged him with operating after suspension, leaving the scene of the accident and failure to report an accident, he said.

The 1994 Pontiac Sunbird registered to Thibault’s girlfriend, Victoria Pingree of Rumford, was totaled, Stevens said.
