PARIS – A Rumford man will spend nine months of a seven-year sentence in the Oxford County Jail after pleading guilty to unlawful sexual contact of a toddler Thursday.
Carroll Webber, 33, of 507 York St., Rumford, was indicted on the charge as a class A felony, but through plea agreements it was reduced to class B.
Webber was arrested July 19 in connection with an incident that had happened the previous weekend, police records show.
He was left to baby-sit an 18-month-old girl that weekend while the rest of the family went camping. During the weekend, a neighbor called the mother to let her know that Webber was drinking while caring for the child.
The mother called another family member to take over caring for the child. When this person went to change the girl’s diaper, she saw blood.
Webber fled the scene, reports show, and threatened to kill himself.
When police arrested Webber, he confessed to sexually assaulting the toddler with his finger.
“He apologized, and said he had been drinking,” Assistant District Attorney Joseph O’Connor said during Thursday’s court proceeding.
After he is released, Webber will have to register as a sex offender for at least 10 years, and be on probation for 10 years. During that time, he won’t be able to have contact with children under 16, he’ll have to attend sex-offender counseling and will be barred from using alcohol and drugs.
O’Connor said that police officers spoke with the girl’s mother prior to the sentencing.
“The mother was quite concerned that he be required to register” as a sex offender, O’Connor said.
