This is in response to Daniel Cyr’s letter (Dec. 3) about reinstituting the military draft. It is a very bad idea to bring back the draft just so there are soldiers to fight wars started for the wrong reasons – such as the occupation of Iraq.
If elected officials want to bring back the draft for their own reasons, perhaps their sons and daughters should be the first to be drafted and sent to the front lines.
I served four years and would do it over again. I believe every young person should serve, as soon as they graduate high school. Then, after serving, they could decide their educational needs and get help from the government to get a good education.
The military draft could be brought back for the right reasons. Freedom is not free. In the past and present, people have died for our freedom. Most come from the lower and middle class, so if the draft comes back, there should be no deferments or reasons not to serve.
