FARMINGTON – Winter’s first blanket of white stuff sent some kids into paroxysms of glee – and cars off the road, police dispatchers said Friday.

By four p.m., Franklin County dispatcher Aaron Wheeler said the department had logged nine car accidents in the greater Farmington area, none serious. There were even a few rollovers, but no drivers or passengers were seriously injured.

“It’s not so bad,” he said. “Usually (on) the first snow, it’s absolutely bonkers crazy in the morning.”

“We had some accidents first thing this morning,” Farmington Police Department Secretary Rachel Heseltine said Friday. “(There were) about five or six in the morning – that’s normal for the first snow. In fact, I was anticipating a lot more than that when I woke up and saw snow.”

None of the accidents were bad, she said – just people slipping off the road.

By mid-afternoon, wind was whipping snow into the air, and many adults could be seen walking down Main Street with scarves wrapped around their faces. But outside the Mallett School, Andrew and Ryan Small, 5 and 7 years old, threw snow up into the air and watched it fall to the ground. Ryan pulled up what looked like a snowball – but instead of throwing it, he bent down to take a test of fresh snow.
