GORHAM – Senior forward Ashley Marble netted a game high 21 points and hauled down nine rebounds as the University of Southern Maine women downed Eastern Connecticut 80-59 Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies had a strong first half leading 43-29 after 20 minutes. Stacey Kent chipped in with 19 points, including four 3-pointers, while Angela Santa Fe added 13 for USM (6-1). Sandy Mosley led Eastern Connecticut (4-3) with 15 points.

Becker 75, Husson 73

BANGOR – Kristin Karat notched a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead Becker to a 75-73 victory over Husson in women’s basketball action Saturday.

The Eagles (4-4) led 41-38 at the half, but the Hawks (5-3) bounced back in the second half behind formidable efforts from Karat and Brittany Evans. Evans tossed a game-high 23 points, while Karat posted five treys among her 20 points.

Shelby Pickering led Husson with 21 points, while Annie McIntosh recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.

Thomas 81, Wheelock 32

WATERVILLE – Kim Drosdik of Farmington finished with 20 points and four rebounds as Thomas College dealt Wheelock an 81-32 crushing defeat in women’s basketball action Saturday.

Amanda Godley provided the Terriers (2-1) a complimentary 19 points and four rebounds in the winning effort.

Jessica O’Connor collected 10 points to pace Wheelock.

Maine Maritime 89, Elms 30

CASTINE – Alyssa Burns shot a blazing 32 points to lead Maine Maritime Academy to an 89-30 triumph over Elms College in women’s basketball action Saturday.

The Mariners (8-0) received fine offensive support from Kaitlyn Leeman, who had nine points, and four different players with another eight points apiece.

Jenn Payton paced the Blazers with eight points in the losing effort.

Norwich 66, Bates 63

LEWISTON – A layup by Caitlyn Bailey and a pair of free throws by Kristi Powlovich in the final minute gave Norwich University a 66-63 victory over Bates in a back-and-forth contest Saturday evening.

Sophomore Val Beckwith hit a pair of free throws, creating the 10th tie of the game and the Bobcats’ (5-3) last lead of the game at 61-60, with 1:01 left. Beckwith scored a game and career-high 25 points.

Powlovich led five Cadets (8-0) in double figures with 14 points.

Bowdoin 76, Colby 40

BRUNSWICK – Eileen Flaherty led the Bowdoin attack, scoring a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Polar Bears to a 76-40 rout over Colby in women’s basketball action Saturday.

Leah Rubega posted 17 points off the bench for the Polar Bears (8-0), while Jill Anelauskas added another 13 points. Bowdoin forced 20 turnovers, while committing just six of their own in the contest.

Kathleen Nicholson recorded 11 points, while Katie McCabe tallied 10 points and 12 rebounds for the White Mules (1-7).

Women’s hockey

St. Lawrence 5, Maine 1

ORONO – The University of Maine Women’s hockey team got on the board :46 seconds into the game but that lead was short lived as No. 7 ranked St. Lawrence scored the next five goals to down the Black Bears 5-1 Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Vanessa Vani scored her ninth goal of the season for the lone goal for the Black Bears (6-10-2). Sabrina Harbec had a pair of goals and an assist for St. Lawrence (14-5-1).
