LEEDS – Dec. 15 will not come soon enough for many people here as they await the deadline for many to comply with the town’s junkyard ordinance.
Code Enforcement Officer Larry Grant said the issue has become troublesome and the town is ready to take the next step Wednesday to remedy the problem.
In October, 28 junkyard violations were issued to residents who were keeping un-permitted illegal junkyards.
“There are more out there but this is about all we can handle right now,” Grant said. “We want to end up with the town cleaned and answer all those complaints that have come in recently.”
Residents have until Wednesday to comply with the ordinance or contact the town with intentions to clean up their junkyard. If no effort has been put forth, Grant said a second warning will be issued, followed by legal action.
Actions will be based on state standards, and fines may differ depending on the violation and the severity of the issue. “The fine can range from $100 to $2,500 for each violation,” Grant said. “For some cases fines vary per day per violation.”
Selectmen and Grant plan to meet this month to decide actions to address residents refusing to comply.
“I think the community is in support of our efforts,” Grant said. “All everyone wants is the town cleaned up.”
