AUBURN – Sabbath lighting ceremonies will bookend Temple Shalom’s Hanukkah celebrations this year.

The holiday begins just before the Sabbath sunset on Friday, 3:30 p.m., behind Temple Shalom at 74 Bradman St.

Members of the temple will continue lighting their 12-foot “mega-menorah” for the next seven days, culminating in the final lighting at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22.

There will be celebrations, music and plenty of food in between, Rabbi Hillel Katzir said Tuesday.

The synagogue’s annual holiday party is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday. It will feature a lot of food, Katzir said.

“We have a bunch of people come over Saturday evening to cook latkes, and the joke is that if they’re not setting off the smoke alarms, they’re not doing it right.”

The nightly menorah lightings are scheduled for different times each night.

“The only time it really matters is on the night before the Sabbath,” Katzir said. “We have to do it before sunset then.”

Menorah lightings are scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; 6:30 p.m. Monday; 6:45 p.m. Tuesday; and 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
