AUBURN – Dr. Robert Limoges of Advanced Dentistry, 220 Main St., Auburn, was recently awarded a certificate of commendation by the Maine Dental Association for his work in formulating rules for the newly designated expanded function dental assistant.
Expanded function dental assistants increase accessibility to dental services by allowing delegation of duties not requiring the specific skills of the dentist or dental hygienist. For example, placement of fillings after cavities are removed by a dentist, or polishing of teeth after cleaning by a hygienist, are duties that could be performed by an expanded function dental assistant.
Dr. Limoges’ role included serving on a committee that developed initial guidelines for legislation enacted to create the position, and serving on a committee of the Maine Board of Dental Examiners to formulate rules
